Ballet

Levels 1 - 7

Our Ballet Program provides dancers with a strong technical foundation while developing strength, flexibility, coordination, musicality, and artistry. Dancers progress through a structured level system designed to safely and progressively build technique, confidence, discipline, and performance quality. Ballet training includes barre work, center exercises, across-the-floor progressions, and performance-based movement while encouraging a lifelong appreciation for dance and artistic expression.

Additional specialty ballet classes include: Ballet Contemporary, Ballet Variations, and Ballet Character. These are not offered every season.

Dress Code

Gasper's & School of Dance maintains a dress code to encourage concentration and a sense of inclusiveness (variations in attire can be distracting and contribute to feelings of inequality). Uniformity in dance wear allows the teachers to assess how well the students are implementing the technique being taught, problems with alignment, and other important aspects of dance training.

Students should carry their dance wear, shoes, and other belongings in a dance bag. Please print your child’s name on the bag as well as on all of its contents. Dance wear is to be kept in good repair and laundered on a regular basis.

Why we have a dress code
  • The uniformity of having a dress code in ballet class and dance styles is to help instructors see proper alignment and body position. Having the same color leotard provides less distraction to both the instructor and the students in the class.

  • We do require our dancers to follow our dress code that is put forth on this web page.

  • Dancers have 3 weeks to comply to the dress code as stated above.

  • Leotard, tights, and shoes may be purchased at Gasper's School of Dance or locally at The Barre Dance Boutique.

  • SKIRTS: If you want to wear a skirt in ballet class, the instructor teaching must allow it. If they do, it must be a black "bullet pointe" style skirt (linked above under ballet).

  • Leotard colors purchased outside of Gasper's School of Dance, must be a close match to the colors we have laid out above.

BEFORE CLASS

What to expect?
  • The first few weeks serve as an adjustment period as students become comfortable with the classroom, teacher, and their classmates.

  • Your child will build skills in coordination, listening, rhythm, musical awareness, and creative movement.

  • We use age-appropriate music, stories, and props to keep classes imaginative and engaging.

  • Dancers in Itty Bitty and Pre-Ballet focus on developing classroom behavior, imagination, and body awareness — not just learning steps.

  • Progress may not always be visible right away (and that’s okay!). Growth looks different for every child.

  • Dancers typically remain in Itty Bitty and/or Pre-Ballet for 2–3 seasons, much like our older levels, as they build foundational skills.

Studio Space / Classroom Etiquette

  • Please do not enter studio spaces unless invited by an instructor. This helps keep classes focused and safe.

  • We offer parent portals so you can observe your dancer’s progress without interrupting class.

  • Encourage your child to carry their own bag into the studio — it builds responsibility and independence!

  • Help us keep our lobby tidy — please supervise siblings and dispose of trash properly.

  • Our staff and instructors are committed to your dancer’s growth. Please treat them with respect and kindness — just as we do with your children.
